Title:
Zhong Kui’s Night Patrol钟馗夜巡
Description:
Crafted in magical realist language, this exclusive one-of-a-kind gongbi painting belongs to the artist’s thematic Zhong Kui series.
The artist delivers a distinctive contemporary artistic innovation: he organically fuses the solemn, righteous divinity of Zhong Kui—the traditional guardian who dispels evil—with the innate agility, sharp perceptiveness, acute alertness and sensitive intuition inherent to a cat. Cats are naturally gifted at detecting subtle invisible fluctuations and hidden hazards, which philosophically echoes Zhong Kui’s sacred duty of perceiving lurking malign forces and eliminating misfortune. This creative fusion shatters age-old stereotyped depictions of Zhong Kui in folk art, breathing modern conceptual depth into time-honored oriental cultural archetypes.
In the composition, the cat-shaped Zhong Kui holds a lantern roaming the night sky to safeguard peace. Layered classical auspicious symbols—full moon, red-crowned crane, yulan magnolia, koi fish and colourful auspicious clouds—embody purity, longevity, noble fame and sustained wealth. The Big Dipper emerging through parted celestial clouds signifies the auspicious omen of Seven Stars Shining Brightly, illuminating one’s life journey and clearing all worldly obstacles.
